About the Sami people
Sami (or Lapi) are indigenous people of Northern Europe who live in Finland, Sweden, Norway and on the Kola Peninsula area of Russia. In the Murmansk region the population of Sami is about 2000 people. Sami people grow reindeer, use it as a transport, warm clothes and food and sell meat and skins. In the tour you will learn about Sami's life and ancient legends. You will meet reindeers and feed them by yourself with northern grass — moss.
Program of the tour
- Meeting with your guide next to your hotel at the prearranged time. Transfer to the Sami village for 40-50 minutes.
- Meeting with a Sami woman Svetlana. You will get a small introduction about sacred stone Seyd, which makes your wishes come true. This is a traditional Sami ritual to get gods' blessing.
- Visiting a winter house called Vezha. Here you will find a lot of reindeer skins. Sami people use this house to live in winter because it is very cold in the tundra. Svetlana will show you some Sami rituals and play on the traditional Sami musical instruments.
- Most interesting part of the program: a visiting of reindeer farm. You will have a chance to feed these funny and friendly animals from your hands. Don't worry: reindeer like people!
- Visiting summer Sami house. Here you will try traditional berry pie and herbal natural tea. Svetlana will tell show you, how Sami people live in the tundra and what staff do they use.
- Photosession! You will put on the traditional Sami clothes and take funny photos!
- Snowmobile sledging trip to the forest for 7 minutes. You will find out all the beauty of nature of the Russian North. Welcome to Sami!
