About Murmansk
Murmansk is the largest city in the world beyond the Arctic Circle. It stands on rocky hills along the Kola Bay, which stays free of ice all winter thanks to the warm North Atlantic current. The city grew up around its port, so almost every page of its history is connected with the sea, sailors and the Arctic. From late August to mid-April you can even see the Northern Lights right here!
During this tour you will hear how Murmansk lived through the Second World War, learn about the people who protected the Arctic, and see the places the locals are most proud of.
Program of the tour
- The Church of the Saviour on Waters (outside). A white church on the shore of the Kola Bay, built in memory of the sailors who died at sea.
- The lighthouse and the Kursk memorial. Next to the church stands a part of the sail of the Kursk submarine. It was saved from a scrapyard and turned into a memorial to the crew with the words 'To the submariners who died in peacetime'.
- The nuclear icebreaker 'Lenin' (outside). The world's first nuclear-powered surface ship is now a museum at the pier. You'll hear how ships opened the Arctic routes through the ice. If tickets are available, you can visit the museum inside for an extra fee.
- Seafood tasting (optional). At the end of the tour you can try local seafood delicacies for an extra fee.
